Planning to Propose in Morocco? A Few Rather Good Places to Do It

In This Article

There are proposals which are carefully choreographed, and there are proposals which simply happen at the right moment.

Morocco lends itself rather well to the latter.

A quiet corner of the desert at sunset, a table on a Marrakech terrace, a private riad after dinner, or a morning spent floating above the countryside — there is no shortage of places in which to ask the question.

The difficulty, if there is one, is deciding where.

Having spent a good deal of time showing people around Morocco, these are a few of the places and ideas we would genuinely consider if we were planning one ourselves.

Agafay Desert

Agafay is close enough to Marrakech to be wonderfully convenient, yet once you are out among its stony hills and empty tracks, the city feels a very long way away.

It is particularly handsome in the late afternoon, when the light becomes softer and the landscape takes on that warm, almost coppery colour Morocco does so well.

There are several ways to arrange a proposal here.

A buggy at sunset

For a couple who enjoy a little adventure, take a buggy together and head out with your guide towards sunset.

The idea is not to stop in the middle of a crowd with a dozen cameras pointed at you. Ask your guide to find somewhere quiet, with a good view and enough privacy for the moment to feel like your own.

When the time comes, stop the buggy, take in the view, and ask the question.

It is rather difficult to improve upon that.

Dinner, music and a proposal

Another possibility is to make the proposal part of an evening in Agafay.

Dinner is served, the music begins, and the entertainment can be arranged around the proposal itself. If the organisers know beforehand, they can make the moment feel quite natural rather than having you suddenly stand up and announce your intentions to an audience of strangers.

One word of caution, however:

Do make reasonably certain that the answer will be yes before proposing in front of the entire show.

Otherwise, I’m afraid you may become the evening’s principal entertainment.

Just the two of you

For those who would rather avoid an audience altogether, spend the night in a private dome.

After dinner, when the camp has quietened down, step outside beneath the stars and ask the question there.

There is something to be said for not having anyone else present at all.

No applause. No photographer hiding behind a curtain. No musicians waiting for their cue.

Just the two of you.

A Hot-Air Balloon Over Marrakech

A proposal in a hot-air balloon has one considerable advantage: it is rather difficult for your partner to wander off before you have finished asking the question.

In seriousness, a sunrise flight is a splendid way to see the countryside around Marrakech.

The balloon rises quietly, the morning light begins to spread across the fields, and the Atlas Mountains sit on the horizon when the weather is kind.

The private option

If the occasion calls for something especially intimate, arrange a private balloon for the two of you and the pilot.

It costs more, naturally, but you have the entire basket to yourselves and can enjoy the morning without an audience.

A breakfast afterwards makes a pleasant conclusion to the affair.

The shared balloon

There is nothing wrong with taking a shared flight, either.

It is considerably less expensive and can still provide a magnificent setting for the proposal. Just speak with the balloon company beforehand. They are accustomed to these occasions and can usually advise you on the best moment.

And do remember the weather

This is one occasion on which a little practical thinking is advisable.

Hot-air balloons do not operate simply because someone has booked one. Wind and weather conditions matter, and the pilot’s decision is final.

If the proposal must happen in the balloon, have another idea ready.

It is also sensible to schedule the balloon early enough in your stay that a cancellation does not leave you with no opportunity to try again.

Marrakech

You needn’t leave the city at all.

Marrakech has plenty of places where a proposal can be arranged without making an expedition of it.

A rooftop

A rooftop overlooking the Medina at the end of the afternoon is a rather civilised affair.

Take a table, order dinner, and let the city carry on below you.

If you have somewhere particular in mind, speak to the restaurant beforehand. A discreet request for a quieter table, a little decoration or a photographer can make all the difference.

There is no need to turn the evening into a theatrical production.

A riad

For absolute privacy, I would give serious consideration to a riad.

Many have beautiful courtyards and terraces which can be arranged with flowers, candles and lanterns without your partner suspecting a thing.

She may think you are merely returning to the riad after dinner.

Instead, you open the door and find the courtyard waiting.

That is a lovely surprise.

And afterwards, you needn’t go anywhere.

Our Favourite: The Sahara

If you are already making the journey south to the Sahara, I think there is an especially good way of doing it.

Don’t propose at the camp.

Go out into the dunes.

A quad at sunset

Arrange a quad for the two of you and head out towards sunset.

Ask your guide to take you somewhere sufficiently far from the camp that you can have a little peace and quiet.

Then find the top of a dune.

The light will be changing by the minute. The shadows lengthen across the sand, the camp becomes a tiny speck in the distance, and for a few moments there is very little else in the world.

That is when I would propose.

There is no way she’s saying no.

Well — we cannot actually promise that.

But the Sahara is certainly making a strong argument on your behalf.

Afterwards, return to camp for dinner and spend the evening beneath the stars.

If you are considering this option, have a look at our Sahara Desert Tours and see how it might fit into your Morocco journey.

A Few Other Possibilities

Not every couple wants a desert proposal.

The Atlas Mountains are worth considering if you both enjoy walking and would rather have a quiet view than a formal dinner.

Essaouira is another charming choice, particularly for someone who loves the sea. A walk along the ramparts or beside the Atlantic, followed by dinner in the old town, can make for a wonderfully unforced proposal.

And then there is Aït Ben Haddou, which suits someone who has always fancied proposing somewhere that looks as though it belongs in an old film.

The trick is not to choose the place which photographs best.

Choose the place which means something to the two of you.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Keep the weather in mind

  • Outdoor plans are splendid until the weather decides otherwise.
  • Agafay can be windy, particularly at certain times of year, and balloon flights are naturally dependent upon suitable conditions.
  • If the proposal is built around one particular outdoor moment, have a second idea quietly arranged.
  • Your partner needn’t know about it.
  • Tell the people involved If a guide, driver, restaurant, camp or photographer is involved, tell them beforehand.
  • They needn’t know your entire life story. They simply need to know what is happening, where you want it to happen and, most importantly, that it is a secret.
  • Be careful with the ring This deserves more attention than people give it.
  • A ring is remarkably small.
  • A Sahara dune is remarkably large. Do the mathematics yourself. Keep it somewhere secure, particularly if you are going on a quad, buggy, camel or hike.

And perhaps don’t spend the entire day nervously checking your pocket every thirty seconds. That tends to raise questions.

  • Consider having the moment photographed

A good photographer can remain almost invisible.

You needn’t have somebody standing three metres away with a large camera pointed directly at your face. If arranged properly, they can be waiting nearby and capture the moment without making the whole affair feel staged.

  • Don’t feel obliged to make a spectacle of it

There is nothing wrong with flowers, musicians, candles and a beautifully prepared dinner.

But there is equally nothing wrong with standing on a dune at sunset with nothing but the person you love beside you.

In fact, sometimes that is rather better.

The proposal should belong to the couple, not to the people watching it.

So, Where Would We Choose?

If you asked us to choose just one, we would probably say the Sahara at sunset.

Not because it is the most luxurious option, or because it makes for the most impressive photograph.

Simply because there is something about standing on a dune, with the sun disappearing and the desert stretching away in every direction, which makes the occasion feel wonderfully removed from ordinary life.

But perhaps that isn’t your style.

Perhaps you would rather be above Marrakech in a balloon, sitting quietly on a riad terrace, or laughing together after a buggy ride in Agafay.

There is no correct answer.

The best proposal is the one which your partner would recognise as yours.

And if you have already decided to ask the question in Morocco, the rest is mostly a matter of choosing the setting — and keeping the ring hidden until the proper moment.

We can help with that part.
